I just got one today but have yet to set it up. What should I expect? This is basically my first recording setup and I wanted something that I could record band practices/demos with. I just couldn't justify spending a ton of money for an interface that I would rarely be using. It was a combo deal and came with an AKG Perception 100 for $250. I figure it would be decent enough for my purpose and to kind of help me get more experienced recording.

Ok so I finally got around to setting this puppy up. I haven't really recorded anything with it yet, just tested to make sure all the channels worked and everything. I have a question though. What is the best 8 mic setup for drums? I plan on micing the toms, snare, kick which will all be triggered in drumagog once I get some $ together to buy it along with two overheads. I still will have one extra channel but don't know what to do with it. Maybe mic the hi hat too? Thanks for any suggestions and I hope to have a mix up some time this week for you guys to make fun of :) .

If you're trigging the snare, put the last channel somewhere in the room where the drums sound as "roomy" as possible. Add a reverb and a compressor and smash the hell out of it = fake large recording space. Fiddle around until you find a sound that works for you.

Alright thanks for the suggestions. Any suggestions on what kind of mic to use as a room mic?

A condenser, as large as possible. But if you do the "smash-room-fake-size" thing, anyone can do the trick since it's more an effect than perfect drum room.
