Allright... got to hear the new Edguy EP

METAL... nuff said!
Hmm.

Not exactly what I was expecting.

Upon first listen... first song sounds incredibly processed and artificial. The rest of the songs have TERRIBLE guitar tone. It sounds like Jens is using a Crate combo amp for his rhythm tone. The vocals are of course Toby, but, the lyrics are kinda, I dunno... wishy washy? And what's all the "Who the fuck is Jesus" stuff?

Last track is funnier than Dave Chappelle! Cracked me up!!! Excellent!!!

Now... I just hope I'm being a whiny little bitch. The disc says it isn't the album version of the other tracks, so maybe the audio quality will be better, and that snare drum will be louder?

I dunno. I may just be too damn anal-retentive about the GREATEST band to have played Prog Power 5? Heh heh...

They better return.... shit... they better have a song about Prog Power on the new album....

Mine came yesterday. At first, I enjoyed it but was expecting more...

Yet I played it again...and then again...and again...

My point is that it really grew on me. King of Fools is kick ass, I feel. It was an OK song at first, but then it really just hit me in the face. The chorus grew on me especially.

New Age Messiah - The controversial track, orchestra at first, then Edguy kicks in. This song grew on me too, and is now probably my favorite of the EP. Then there's the one verse with the f word...where "Who the fucking fuck is Jesus"... It caused a stir at the Edguy forums as people though he was bashing religion and stuff, but Tobias explained it on his corner what the song is talking about.

The Savage Union - Glad this is on EP not the album. This is the one song I feel could be a filler... Nothing really new for Edguy...song just is what it is. Doesn't even end...just fades out.

Holy Water - Pretty good metal ballad like song. I like it.

Life and Times of a Bonus Track - Funny track...just Tobias on a piano. It makes me wonder if he did it all in one take too. *shrugs* And the song is kinda catchy once you've heard it enough...

Overall, I like the EP...and listening to King of Fools, I feel that Hellfire Club is going to kick ass. I just can't get enough of how in your face the song KOF is. Like when Tobias goes "Hah!" after "You feel at ease as you flock with the masses"...it's just in your face.

Can't wait for Hellfire Club! :headbang:

I agree with all your comments above. The most memorable tune is the bonus laugh-track. Don't know if that is a good sign. I'll wait to hear the full-length CD before I buy it.

Yeah... I'm sure the album will be killer. I'm.... just being a little too nitpicky? I guess? And I'll go over and read up on what Toby was aiming for with Messiah.

Still can't stop laughing at the Life and Times...... such good stuff. And it doesn't even sound like he wrote the lyrics down! Like he was drining beer... said "Hey guys... come here.... and start the tape rolling." ...and just went at it!

Ahh.... half a month away...

Trust me, the songs on King of Fools when compared to Hellfire Club are nothing. When you hear Down to the Devil, Under the Moon or The Piper Never Dies you will be blown away. Despite my massive and immense Edguy fanboyism I honestly can say that Hellfire Club is leaps and bounds above the EP and Mandrake. Take Theater of Salvation and throw in a few pounds of maturity (with the exception of Lavatory Love Machine, the best humor metal song I've heard) and heaviness and you have Hellfire Club. Plus there's not any "fucks" either, I guess Tobi went wild on the EP ha.

I must agree with Bryan316 on King of Fools.

KOF - The first song is very processed, however the riff is pretty cool, but the drums are so basic its annoying (Where's the famous Felix double bass).

NAM - I'm no guitarist so I can't comment on tone, but I like New Age Messiah, it kicks ass, and is a fun song which I expect from Edguy.

TSU - Decent song, Typical Edguy.

Holy Water - Ballad, good song but its tough to really love when you've already heard Land of the Miracle or Sand of Time.

Life and Times of a Bonus Track - I love it, thats the Tobi I remember from PPIII. he makes songs just to get people to laugh, and how original, a song from the perspective of the bonus track.

Only the song King of Fools is on Hellfire Club, but I hope the song styles on the album are more like the other songs as they were much more enjoyable and have greater replay value.

Edguy for PP5

I like Edguy. However, I've always felt that their CDs are rather inconsistent. There's always a handful of songs on their discs that I really like, and handfull that I think are just lame.

I got as far as "New Age Messiah", on the new EP, and just stopped listening. That "Fuck Fuck Fuckity Fuck" chorus is about the most childish thing I've ever heard. I don't find it "controversial" at all. Hell, I dig "Dechristianize" by Vital Remains. I just think it sounds as if the lyrics were written by a 9 year old who just learned a new curse word.

All I can say is, thankfully I got to hear without buying it first. I was hoping they would be returning to PP this year (assuming Zero Hour is not an option). However, if they're going to be playing a majority of new songs, let them stay home.

I think Tobias says the f word mainly to poke fun at it, as he wants people to realize it's just a word and not some satanic ideal. Kinda like how at PP3 Tobias told us how the interviews he does in the states, they tell him not to say swear words.

So he then proceeds to get the audience to chant and sing melodies just using swear words before going into "The Headless Game"

So when I heard New Age Messiah, that's what it reminded me of, and it made me smile.

Oh well, every single person I've seen that has heard Hellfire Club says it has potential of being the best Edguy album ever, and possibly album of the year for any band.

So I wouldn't write off the new material yet. The EP is supposed to be different then the album *No f word on the album*, and the EP does grow on you!

I guess I don't get enjoying a band like Vital Remains and feeling like you have to be able to take the lyrics of another band so seriously. Death Metal in and of itself is pretty damn silly if you ask me,e specially considering how seriously those bands take themselves. Puff up your face like a blowfish and gurgle some lyrics about satan...childish and dysfunctional. I also think you have to give some degree of leeway here to the fact that English is not these guys' first language - the lyrics aren't half as questionable as Sonata Arctica's, and SA isn't even joking!

King of Fools took a few listens before I realized how much I liked it, New Age Messiah has a fine guitar tone, because I like hearing different tones and it sounds fine without having to have a truckload of low-end and whatnot. Its clean, has nice crisp distortion and it works for the song, so I dunno. I play guitar and have gotten into recording in recent time and it sounds fine to me. The song itself can be explained on Edguy's website, its not meant to be totally serious and I have found it to be an addictive song. The gratuitous cussing is not something I dig, especially not with Jesus' name thrown in, but again, this can be explained on the website, and there is some amount of weird enjoyment from hearing a majestic sounding chorus singing 'fuck' so nicely.

The Savage Union has some nicely crafted moments, (the lead up to the chorus) but it is the filler song. Still enjoyable. Holy Water is pretty damn excellent in my opinion. It is typical, but its ounds quite damn good to me. The orchestra is used nicely as it blends in and accents the rest of the music, and I personally didn't dig wash away the poison, this one is more enjoyable for me. The bonus track is just funny. Overall this EP has me excited as hell for the upcoming album, which I have heard from people (who have heard it ahead of time from I imagine the very dubious means of obtaining promo copy tracks) is the sbest thing Edguy has done. I'll be a happy bastard if they return. :D
