I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mortiis. His new stuff is darkwave-influenced stuff, but his first few albums offer some great ambience. Especially check out "Keiser Av En Dimensjon Ukjent".

I didn't realize we had any other dark ambient fans around, besides V.V.V.V.V.

Lots of great recs so far. One i would probably reccomend first is Raison d'Etre. They were my introduction to the genre and are probably still my overall favorite of the style.

for something apart from dark ambient, Steve Roach - Mystic Chords & Spaces is a nice 4 CD set of some of the best "straight" ambient i've heard.

There's an excellentgood ambient/electronica project by one of the members of the Icelandic band Ampop. It's called Blindfold and it's really relaxing, chilled-out stuff.
