With absolutely nothing on TV (NBA is the worst professional sport there is which is such a travesty considering how good college basketball is), I ended up having this on for a little while because I figured it'd at least garner laughs. Anyway, lots of sad acts go on with a few good ones here and there. Until the end of the show that is...

Does everyone recall the whole Paul Potts extravaganza from the British version of the show? If not, here's a video.

Basically the guy came out of nowhere and the one judge who does both shows does an eye roll the moment he says he's going to sing opera. Ends up winning the whole thing and is a huge sensation.

So what happens last night on the American version?

This:

Why am I inclined to believe this is setup since reality shows are trash. He just happens to be the very last performer for the tryouts? Apparently he's performed at Carnagie Hall according to some of the youtube comments. Not sure how true that is but the whole deja vu thing seems a bit like the producers desperately trying to recreate the Paul Potts magic in America. I'm curious however if this is a good or bad thing for the guy. If it's not set up, will the guy have any chance of winning? I imagine a ton of people are going to bring up this comparison and it may worry the producers. Besides, his voice seemed kind of weak even compared to Potts.

The guy has talent. But does he hold up to people who are familiar with opera? Also, people have this idea that a good opera singer is the epitome of talent. There is talent in many styles of singing (or instrument playing, or anything else) but in audience reception it seems to pale in comparison to opera.

I think he's good, but because he's on a 'pop' show people will see him as the next coming of christ. Paul Potts to me was legit.

But here's an amazing opera singer.
