Amon Düül II

okay I think I saw the other day InsideOut was reissuing some [font=&quot]Amon Düül II stuff....probably only in europe but still...
I know they're an acquired prog/krautrock taste but I find their eccentricity interesting. All I have is a disc issued by Purple Pyramid, called The Best of 1969-1974, with tracks like Deutsch Nepal and Wie der Wind Am Ende Einer Strasse...

does anyone (IoftheStorm??) have a recommendation on which proper album to buy?

keeping in mind I pretend to be much more of an avant/prog/kraut/zeuhl/whatever connoisseur than I really am, or have full knowledge of .... :P

out of the few I've heard, I've appreciated the first albums more so than what I've heard of latter ones

I specifically remember , Yeti, Tanz der something? (I keep thinking schatten but thats another band altogether  )

this way you have a backup vote for one of the first couple albums, in case someone else recommends them too

Although they are categorized in the "kraut rock" category, their sound was different than the "traditional kraut" sound of Can or Neu!. They were more complex, less monotonous, more melodic, they had more musical variety, richer musicianship etc etc. Every fan of progressive rock in general should like them, even if he doesnt like any other kraut rock band.
Best 3:
Yeti
Phallus Dei
Wolf City
this is their holy trinity for me, and after them come:
Danz Der Lemminge (their most weird one)
Carnival In Babylon (their most melodic one)
Totally ignore everything from Amon Duul (without the II), they were talentless.
There are already some re-releases in cool digipack cases (with lots of bonus tracks) around. Also search for the Phallus Dei dvd where the band performs the title track while being in a great acid trip (as far as i can tell by watching them). Their "eccentricity" was probably that they were really "unique" in the way that few are, in all aspects, and.. because of other things (they lived together blah blah).
Anyway buy "Phallus Dei" and "Yeti" for a start, and then the others (naturally). And Renate Knaup was one pretty woman back then.
