we're going the second week of september and have to stay there for 2 nights

There are hostels all over the place in Amsterdam.

Im also there in the second week of september....have a look at www.booking.com ...there are a lot of hotels which are extremly bad but also very, very, veeeeeery expensive!

If a hostel is too expensive, try the park benches or under a bridge? Like Jeff said, if you can't afford a hostel chances are you shouldn't be going.

My recommendation would be the Skotel hotel in Amsterdam. It's an hotel right next to the Hotelschool in Amsterdam which is run by the students i believe. Pretty decent rooms and it's about 50 euro per night. Here is a link for you

We booked a hostel room called "heart of amsterdam". Was smack bang in the red light district!

Hostels are cheap, if you can't afford it, sleep on the street or get drunk and pull an all nighter.
