is better than any black metal band out there right now.

It's almost like listening to Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk all over again.

Eschaton is fucking awesome.

Let's get it over with before some genre-defining prats start rambling on about how "it's not really black metal, but more of a death/black/chaos/noise/industrial metal band".

It's. black. metal.

Ok, Emperor is a better black metal band, but IMO, Emperor is THE black metal band. Or was, rather...they aren't really a band because they reformed for just a couple of shows and Ihsahn is doing his own thing and Samoth and Trym have Zyklon. But Darkthrone? No. Dark Funeral? No. Marduk? No. Anorexia Nervosa? Please. Dimmu Borgir? HA! COF? I'm not even going to remark.

Don't say Enslaved either, cuz they're more Viking metal now.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, Nick Barker is on the kit now and one of the guys from Napalm Death is on the bass. Don't quote me on that and feel free to correct me.

Like you wouldn't anyway.

Well, Anaal Nathrakh are not my favourite either. I just agree with the sentiment that they are pretty cool.

I think Hate Forest have the mantle of my favourite BM band.

I could list many bands, but I won't.

Blut Aus Nord (at least their new stuff anyway) is kinda bland in my opinion.

It has its moments like "Our Blessed Frozen Cells", but overall it's kind of bleh.

hmmm a few:
Wolves in the Throne Room (their debut album is #2 album of the year for me), Negura Bunget (their new album OM is #1) Taake, Abigor, (old) Ulver, Sacramentum, Woods of Ypres (really only the Against the Seasons album)

Matt, feel free to help me out

And yes Hate forest kicks ass too, though they dont have much in familiar with emperor.

oh dear maxipad, I've already been offering my input.

and if you want to even cross into the realm of NSBM (I know some people have prohibitions against that, which I respect) I could go off even more.

Wolves In the Throne Room, Deathspell Omega, Watain, Lurker of Chalice, Drudkh (not including their folk album) I would argue are better. And Hate Forest, but they are no more. But with an Emperor reference and the clear death metal influence (sorry, but it does delineate a difference), I doubt these bands would be quite your thing, Dead Winter. Ruins of Bevrast are good though. And Southern Lord has distro on Funeral Mist as well.

I like Anaal Nathrakh, so I'm not trying to be a prat about it. I just don't listen to it in the same context to the aforementioned bands.
