do you guys ride and manip faders during a mix, or is it all automated?

Seems so old school and eddie kramer like to do it manually, but I was just curious...

I must admit, it is quite the rad thing to watch that control surface wiggle waggle back n forth after being told what to do.

these days i automate everything. i remember the days of rehearsing and learning moves... one screw up and you either start over or punch in. glad those days are gone.... no nostalgia for them at all. the first automation i had was VCA based... the VCAs went into the inserts of each channel on the console and gave you fader and mute automation only. effects i automated with midi from hardware effects units. i still sometimes automate outboard with midi though, like feeding a Lexicon PCM 80 with beat clock or changing patches, etc.

Local studio I did a bit of work at just went all analogue, so I suppose I'll have to get acquainted with riding the desk again . Certainly no love for it here either.
