you can use the ride and bell together which will help it cut thru nicely...but the bell is still a WHOLE lot louder than the ride cymbal
here's a demo clip of a tune i'm working on http://disvisioned.net/clips/cobrahead_vamp_core.mp3 the first time the thrashy drum beat comes in i used just the ride cymbal, which is nearly inaudible...then the 2nd time i used the the ride + bell, and it came out a little more...the 3rd time thru i switched to the hats
