Animus Herilis Recipere Ferum

Animus Herilis formed in 1993 but surprisingly their first album, Recipere Ferum got released only last year. They come from France, and play old-school black metal in its purest form. Forget about cheesy melodies, keyboards or catchy chorus lines when you when you give their album a listen. This music is about dark emotions filled with hatred.
Of course we can start to complain that we have heard it all before, but classical black metal is never boring. It doesnt matter if it sounds almost the same as something we already know, if it is agressive and dark enough. Mid-paced tempos, monotone but thrilling riffs with variety kept to a minimum results in some furious and dark black metal. The band start the album without any hesitation or any kind of intro, the music simply roars out from the speakers, and the intensity just goes on from song to song. The repetitive drum beats, distorted guitars and shrieking vocals are kinda primitive, as some may say, but this suits the pure black metal.
Animus Herilis also include slower parts in some of the songs, to give them a slight epic touch (but when I say epic, think about Burzum but not Moonsorrow). Their lyrics are against all forms of religions according to their promo letter, but thuis aside I have no idea about them, since they are in French and the booklet does not include translation, nor does their homepage. It does not affect the overall atmosphere of the album.
Recipere Ferum is a strong album, but only real fans of black metal will appreciate it. I am glad that some bands are still producing music like this because only this mentality can keep the style alive.
