does one of you guys happen to know how the
phone effect on the vocals of annihilators "the box" was done ?
heard this particular sound somewhere in dimmu borgirs puritanical ...
and soilwork, probably lots of more records.
its not just eq, but some kind of fuzz or distortion ?
i know theres different ways to get there but i'd like to know
about the oldschool method so i could simulate it via plugins.
cheers, trym.

Put in a lowpass and a highpass so you only get the midrange parts, tweak the frequency and Q depending on the range of the voice and how the effect is 'pronounced' in the mix, and you're set. Most EQs do in fact have a phone-sounding kind of preset, also might want to try a peak limiter as most phones have a very small volume range.

But you still need some kind of distortion.

Try any plugin wich does distortion, maybe you find it nice to use a speaker simulation as well (like the Cubase/Nuendo Overdrive has). Needs a lot of fiddling around to get it right.

Think about the reverbiation as well, i guess a very small room used a little could give even better results.

I think trym is not talking about the "classic" phone effect here....
If you're talking about the effect on dimmu's puritanical song, it sounds more like a granulizer to me.

yep, i did try it just using eq which didnt work out.
my od plugs wouldnt give the desired effect either.
burny: exactly like the dimmu borgir song, sounds nearly
the same as the one on "the box".
whats a granulizer ? :hypno:
can u recommend one ?
