Another Kind Of Death – Unfinished
Demo – Self released 2002
By Russell Garwood

Another Kind Of Death are from Madrid, and play an eclectic, mathematical mix of hardcore, emo and metal with occasional noise and death overtones. The five piece recently released their “Unfinished” MCD which was recorded, mixed and mastered by Samuel Ruiz at V.R.S. studio in Madrid. This latest promo comprises three of the band’s most recent songs, recorded to gain label interest and showcase their eclectic sound.

The drums are excellently performed, flowing with the numerous time changes and odd time signatures, but can sound weak due to the recording. Crunching guitars have a technical feel but sound more meaty than the drums, while the bass is competently performed using not only picking but also slapping and popping to add variety. The vox switch between a non-guttural rasp and singing, and there are also occasional samples, which show the band has a sense of humour while fragmenting the tracks.

Another Kind Of Death are obviously competent performers, my only complaint about the tracks on “Unfinished” is that they lack cohesion and memorability; the music can feel disjointed and bewildering. Even the sung sections aren’t readily accessible or catchy, but if you are used to technical music this won’t have great impact. “Another Kind Of Death” is definitely a band with much potential.
