another pointless review

sometimes people get confused:

"This is an auction for Antimatter's newest opus, 'Lights Out'. This album was released in 2003 by The End Records. It features 8 tracks of melancholic, orchestral type music, not far from Anathema.
Darren Patterson of Anathema fame provides the guitar, bass, and keyboards.
This CD is brand new, and still sealed.

ANTIMATTER : Saviour ex- ANATHEMA
new band of DUNCAN PATTERSON
Ambient Gothic

01. Saviour
02. Holocaust
03. Over Your Shoulder
04. Psalms
05. God Is Coming
06. Angelic
07. Flowers
08. The Last Laugh
09. Going Nowhere

Early moments indicate an Anathem-ic symmetry, nearly duplicative of the ambient closeness of said band's later runs, distinguished by languid female vocals to further sensuousness and depress earlier notions of comparability-and then one reads the press release and the ties are indeed binding.

Former Anathema bassist Duncan Patterson created Antimatter in '98 along with multi-instrumentalist Michael Moss, evidently to further explore previously sought after terrain on the lighter scope of ambient music, going it a step richer and more passionate.

The female duo of Michelle Richfield and Hayley Windsor share the singing duties, with an occasional aside from Moss, who trades with Windsor for the standout "The Last Laugh," and while neither can boast one outstanding trait or distinguishability over the other, their soulful presence adds the extra depth of emotion, that "dark tranquility" if you will, of Antimatter's element.

On the off occasion, as with track five, "God Is Coming," the music takes a dub turn, accentuating a programmatic persona, though in most cases the mood is soft, somber, sensual, and "Angelic" as documented by the song, a beautifully sung ballad that begs for attention inasmuch as spiritual affirmation.

The mood is dark, generally desperate, and desirous, rooted deeply in new age and percussive parallels, autumnally embraceable, mildly idyllic, calm with an occasional conflict-think in terms of an orchestral-like blend of Theatre of Tragedy or The Gathering, with a Goth-like presence of a Lycia and progressive moods of the all encompassing newcomer, Tapping The Vein. "Saviour" is a heavyhearted creation that's at once foreboding, disquieting, and inspiring.

Antimatter - Lights Out
Prophecy Productions 2003

This is the second studio album of antimatter after saviour (not counting live@k13 with some exclusive anathema-versions this time). Antimatter is a project of mick moss and ex-anathema bandmember Duncan patterson. As we’re talking about anathema anyway: I think this album is most comparable with alternative 4, and perhaps with a natural disaster, though the latter was only released yesterday.
Saviour was written during a long period, and contained diverse feelings which were shown in diverse songs. Lights out sounds on the contrary more as a whole. This is logic as it’s written during a shorter period of time.
The beginning of the first song, the title track lights out, is most comparable with a hollow sounding fire alarm, followed by a soft piano and a guitar, a prelude for the rest of the album.
The songs, sounding ambient, are a combination of electronics and melancholic guitars, pretty coloured by different voices. All of them are very quiet. Your mood should fit, when listening to the album. It should be preferably rather serene. Today it’s a rainy autumn day, it fits the music.
But don’t be mistaken. This album hasn’t much to do with metal, or even with rock. These days it’s a trend among older metalbands to make somehow a ‘soft’ album. But luckily antimatter is a big step ahead to this. (they’ll continue this road: album number three will be completely acoustic and is soon to be released).
Apart from mick moss and Duncan patterson, Jamie cavanagh (the third anathema brother), hayley Windsor and michelle Richfield (the girls who sung as well on saviour) are contributing as well.

Mooie review! Is ook een prachtig album. Heb zojuist Live @ K13 ontvangen en die klinkt ook goed. Wist niet dat er een volledig acoustisch album aan zat te komen, dus dat is leuk nieuws op deze verder saaie avond.
