back in the day, the music industry was a few titanic sized corporations and a bunch of "independent" labels filling in the niches the corps couldn't be bothered with. What happened with Nirvana is a case in point, the Bigs couldn't be bothered with anything groundbreaking but Sub Pop was willing, and a legend was born.
Of course, then the corporations signed anything in a flannel shirt trying to cash in, and Nirvana sold out by signing with that fag David Geffen.
and DiFranco, can't really care about the music, but I admire the hell out of her independence. Major companies have tried to woo her for years for obscene stacks of cash but she won't give it up.
