Answer this for me....

excellent question. I've never wondered this myself though as I've always thought of "indie" music as pure shit. Has anyone ever actually *heard* Ani diFranco? Jesus. She's terrible. A huge draw for the dike crowd though. I can see how she's successful. Probably drives a subaru.
Ever browsed the indie section in your local "indie" shop? No shortage of good music to be found. Some of which is occasionally discussed here.

No, I was obviously just trying to incite an argument.
Btw, do I know you from here or the opeth forum of long ago? I can't remember/you don't post much.

back in the day, the music industry was a few titanic sized corporations and a bunch of "independent" labels filling in the niches the corps couldn't be bothered with. What happened with Nirvana is a case in point, the Bigs couldn't be bothered with anything groundbreaking but Sub Pop was willing, and a legend was born.

Of course, then the corporations signed anything in a flannel shirt trying to cash in, and Nirvana sold out by signing with that fag David Geffen.

and DiFranco, can't really care about the music, but I admire the hell out of her independence. Major companies have tried to woo her for years for obscene stacks of cash but she won't give it up.

Wouldn't that alienate her subaru-driving fanbase? She'd end up losing money in the end, I bet [/cynical]

Heh Meg White. I've seen reviews that say stuff like, "Meg White's drumming is so pure. She fills the pocket so perfectly."
bwahaha

RS is trying to pimp her into the 21st century blondie

Pavement were outfuckingstanding up until their last couple albums. Slanted and Enchanted is probably one of my favorite albums.

I picked up Slanted and Enchanted 10 years too late I think. I do enjoy it but I don't hear any magic there. I would much rather listen to the Meat Puppets when I'm in that kind of mood.
