Any UAD users here?

I wanted one at some point but I have the feeling it's slowly getting outdated and outperformed by some native plugins and modern CPU and it's not cheap.

Its cool.
I own a Duo + a Quad card and quite a few plugins so maybe Im in too deep to be really objective about it
but I dont think anyone doubts the quality of the plugins.

I bought my first UAD card back when native dsp was much more limited but no regrets so far.

Its also fun to have tools that not everyone with a torrent client has.

I know the plugs get good reviews etc, but I guess the idea that I don't fully understand is the dedicated DSP hardware: it made sense a few years back when the CPU power wasn't there, but having hardware dongles to run plugins seems like a massive buy in price for plugs that aren't *that* much better than current native offerings.

Wouldn't they unlock a much larger market if they started offering them in native format?

I wasn't aware of the UAD-2 Solo, $299 but only with 5 MKI plugs.

A UAD Apollo goes for 650 euro from Thomann and it's Mac only (unless you get a special PCI card), couple that with the premium with Apple hardware, and you're getting an expensive set up.

Much as I love the UAD stuff especially for verbs, The mk 1 plug-ins good as they were in the day are no where near as good as the waves stuff.
The puigchild compressor is awesomely close to the real thing, as is the CLA 76

No idea about the mk 2 stuff, but I'm hearing good things.

Lol.

Waves CLA76 - 400$

UAD-2 SOLO (+FREE 1176 and other) - 300$

Way, way better.

Waves isn't the only company that makes plugins you know. Softube, Native Instruments or IK multimedia make some good modeled stuff too not to mention the forthcoming Slate virtual rack.
Furthermore, that 1176 plugin from UAD was developed more than ten years ago. I remember hearing about it for the first time for the mackie D8b around 2002 if I'm not mistaken.

i'm pretty interested in picking up an apollo twin duo in the future. the MKII plugins look great, as does the chandler amp sim but the plugin I'm most keen for is the EMT140. outside of nebula I'm not aware of anything else that comes close. altiverb is meant to have some good impulses of them but I'm really not interested in using impulses for reverb.

I speak about emulation classic devices.

Nontheless, for the past 10 years only Softube was able to come close to UAD 1176 and hardware, they are the ones who made autorelease as in the original device. LA-2A has still no analogues (except UAD) - its two-stage autorelease for some unknown reason hasn't been emulated yet. For 10 years.

Not trying to turn this into a pissing contest, I'm just saying that there are more and more reasonably good sounding and cheaper alternatives.

Big UAD user here. I love my UAD plug ins. And I own a lot of plug ins. I wish I had just staarted investing in UAD from the start. Would have saved lots of cash not investing in plug ins that simply do not compare.

Looking to pick up the Neve plug in preamp they just released today! Pairing the hardware (Apollo) with the preamp emulations is pure genius.

Cheaper - maybe (LA-2A free for UAD owners)
Good sounding - yes
Emulating sound characteristics original hardware - no

For example: IK Black76 and White2A vs Hardware 1176 and LA-2A

BIG UAD-2 user here too, i really love how the compressors and eqs does sound and react, especially the updated models for fairchild, Teletronix® LA-2A Classic Leveler Collection and 1176 Classic Limiter Plug-In Collection

basically i find most of their plugins very musical and usable, but to be honest, i´m not a fan of the brainworx stuff that has been released recently for UAD plattform , also the amp sims they offer (softube -> pretty outdated ey?? ) and the new Engl and Chandler didnt got me.

the plugins are a bit pricy, but UA has frequently great offers and reduced prices, you just need to be patient and you can get GREAT Deals from them too for most of their plugins

also they have sometimes good hardware deals, like if you purchase an UA LA610MKII Tube Channelstrip/Preamp, you get a free UAD-2 Duo card with it..
thats not that bad.

i also own the Native Instruments Komplete 9 package which inlcudes lots of similar plugins as what UA offer, but the name and gui similarities are the only common things they share.. not that the NI Plugins are bad, no, they are great sounding too, but very different to UA and less musical (imho)
