anybody got a clue how to make a mode 4 NOT sound like shit?

I've never actually heard one of these things that I can recall. (The cabs are great, though; better made than the standard Marshall cabs, too, as they have ply backs rather than the particle board backs on the standard cabs. And no, the standard cabs are not all particle board.)

I started to hear, after the initial bashing died down after their release, that they're not actually terrible per se, no moreso than the Valvestates, as that's pretty much what they are, just obscenely overpriced.

I would suspect, if they're pretty much a Valvestate in a different headshell, that keeping the mids up high, the treble backed off a bit, and making sure you're running through a good cab would probably do the trick for a decent solid-state metal crunch. I wouldn't expect it to sound phenominal, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't at least coax a passable tone out of that thing.

If +mids, -treble (and probably backing off the gain!) doesn't work, than... well, patch a Pod XT through the effects return, I guess. :p

I had it... biggest piece of shit I've ever owned.
use a tube screamer. It should "un-muddy" it a bit making it a little little more acceptable. but yeah, re-amping is the better idea...

curious, why does have to use it?

The best way to make it not sound shit is to not let it make any sound in the first place. Horrible, horrible amps.

Can't agree more. I think Marshall just threw this amp together when System of a Down was everyone's favorite band, so they could mooch off their fame. They had to have spent more time on the shell than the electronics inside...then get Daron Melikilsiokishfieflon to lay across two half stacks in an ad and BOOM, instant sales!

I agree with smy1...record the Marshall, and record something that's actually useable to compare it with, and as long as the guy trusts your ability to capture the Mode Four as well as any other amp, it should be obvious to him that the Mode Four is trash. If he still insists on using it...just let him think the final mix is the Mode Four.

He probably just feels like since he put down so much money on it, it HAS to be used or else his spending won't be justified.

oh yeah, funny story. These guys have been here for two weeks. 13 songs, marathon sessions, all day and all night, tonight they went home. Mode Four Dude has to leave his head here. He makes sure to tell me that he'll leave it here but "nobody else can use it."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I told him "I couldn't imagine what I would use it for."
