Im looking at building 2 mesa 2x12 cabs, ive took pictures from the mesa site as well as dimensions and scaled pictures up to actually size in photoshop. It looks like the cab is made up of 2 layers of 19/32 ply which together roughly add up to 1 1/8in. the dimensions on the mesa site are pretty straight foward
30 1/8 x 14 1/4 x 16 3/8. ive located tolex on line pretty cheap about $14 for every 3 feet of 56in wide material. as well as grill cloth for about $10 a yard.

Im somewhat at atloss on how to go about making the grill im thinking of seting the speaker baffle in about 1 5/8 so i can make the grill out of my 19/32 ply and still give me a roughly 1 1/8in recess to make the cab some what uniform all the way around.

Anyone done this before on here, im relatively new to speaker building ive done 4 18in subwoofers for my pa before that turned out nicely. anyone have any tips or pics of there own builds that might help me out.

Thanks in advance guys the forums is uber helpfull

I'm curious about this too. I wouldn't mind building my own speaker cabinet(s) for personal/studio use. Helps that I have a TON of woodworking tools and power equipment. :)

I cloned a Laboga 2x12 oversized and it sounds awesome. It has the same size but I've done a personal internal treatment with foam and wood between the front panel and the rear panel (like a 4x12) and several reinforcement in the angles, etc..
I'm goin' to finish the front grill, removable with velcro.
I've never listened the Laboga cabs but I chose it because it's oversized but not as a Bogner, so I can have more bass than a traditional 2x12 and I can load onto my car with no problems.
Mesa, Vht,etc seem to be tiny and I don't want a tiny sound :)
Ah...all the cabs are build with 0.7/0.78 inches ply

Just put your speakers in a brick shithouse. It might not be as solid as a Mesa cab, but it will probably be lighter. :p

I also took the specs from a mesa 2x12 and added a few mods. My suggestion is to use birch ply or other hardwood ply (not just the laminated stuff). The regular plywood around here is made of pine...that's a soft wood. The speakers on the mesa on rear loaded, so I made mine front loaded...but it shouldn't matter much. Instead of using the fabric, I used a removable steel mesh. I also added some storage space at the bottom...I'm regretting that now as it now probably weighs around 90 lbs. Here are a few pics:

It was a fun project for me...good luck.

No kidding, 90lbs is a bit excessive. Must've made it out of METALLLL!

alan: I did find a lot of great resources online for building cabinets. Here are some links:

http://www.duncanamps.com/technical/speaker_cab.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20040605.../59supercab.htm
http://www.kbapps.com/
http://colomar.com/Shavano/construction.html
http://www.silvatone.bravepages.com/

Hope some of that helps you out. I'm definitely considering building myself a nice 2x12, similar to maybe a Mesa...dunno yet. I found a lot of useful info on cabinet tuning from the DuncanAmps site (linked above) about how important it can be to actually tune the cabinet for a particular tuning you will be using. I use Eb standard for my blues stuff, and C# standard for anything heavy. I'm curious to see what my Marshall 2x12 is tuned to, if at all, and if it's possible to alter a cabinet's "Q". I would be interested to see how much of a difference it actually makes, supposedly it is a great deal of a difference, but I've never heard of tuning a cabinet before or anything.

If I do build my own I'll definitely be making a tutorial out of it, with lots of pictures and info. And, at the same time, try to use as many DIY tools as possible, so any other users could make their own easily as well. That's all assuming the project goes well :)

wow thanks a ton bro!!

Just noticed some of those links are down now...weird, I was just looking at them before I posted them!

The kbapps site is just simply www.kbapps.com, there is a bunch of cool shit on it. Most notably the cabinet design calculator. Really helpful stuff.

Well I have a Bogner 2x12 closed back which checks in at 68 pounds (the stupid website says 79, but I stuck in on a scale out of curiosity) and that thing is monstrous in size, so I find it hard to believe any other 2x12 could weigh much more.

Just threw it on the scale... 77.4 ...so my guesstimate was about 13 pounds shy. But damn...it sure feels like 90.

After carrying a Mesa 4x12" cab a Marshall felt light enough to pick up with one hand and toss about. I think Mesa must line their cabs with lead or something....
I think alot of it has to do with the construction the mesa cab is 2 layers of really heavy duty plywood while the marshal cab is 2 of pressed chipboard.

see in my case its not the weight savings but the space savings that im looking at. I have a small audi and while i can fit a 4x12 in the trunk i cant fit anything else in there.

Alan, have you thought about Avatar cabs?

~e.a
Yeah i used to have a 4x12 from them, not that it was bad quality or anything im just in the mood to build something on my own, I already have the speakers and i can get all the materials and parts to build this cab for around $65

Like i said above I have built a few folded horn subs with some decent results so im sure i can pull off this

I don't know if the cabs tuning make the difference...I mean, do you think Mesa,Orange, Bogner or Marshall tune their cabinets? Everyone can use the cab with a different guitar tune so...it's useless I think
