Anyone else think Wintersun sucks ass?

Wintersun is cool, I would hardly say the vocals are rip of COB which don't know how to properly scream. I have heard much much worse... but I do think they are a little overated 8/10, this band is new so they haven't proved much, but this guy(Jari) is no musical retard . Jari does have some decent guitar skills(cool leads on debut album), and the second album "TIME" which got pushed back to summer of 07 is going to be epic.
I have faith in wintersun, but I wouldn't say groundbreaking but not horrible.

Neither album is particularly good. That said, The Somberlain occasionally lapses into profundity while Storm of the Light's Bane just blurs blithely along its saccharine path.

Sacramentum was clearly the first, last and only word in this general style.
 
If by "solid" you mean "brilliant" yes, I'd go along with that. Their subsequent releases suffer a bit from the heavy-metal-as-'death metal' disease, but Far Away From the Sun is simply an amazing recording.
 
Metal and ambient are pretty much the only genres to emerge in the latter half of the 20th century that have produced ANY truly brilliant releases - the rest is monkey music. But yeah, the caution is well taken.

You're just wrong about this particular release.

Then, there's the horrible singer who must think he sounds really emotional and moving when he goes clean. I can't help but laugh every time he shifts to a clean tone.

I'd much rather listen to the new Insomnium or some Swallow the Sun if I want cool, dark Finnish melodic death. At least their music has balls and none of this cheesy, pathetic drama that permeates Wintersun's material.

fine if you want "cool dark finnish melodic death" listen to those bands, but wintersun does have a style of their own along with fucking epic and memorable songs beautifully recorded with amazing musicmanship.
