Anyone ever track drums/cymbals separate?

i'd heard that for the second Transplants album, Travis Barker recorded every drum and every cymbal separately…

if you can get your drummer to get the hits spot on then it'll reduce your workload, otherwise your gonna have a lot of hours of editing ahead...
 
Well, all the drums were sample replaced in the end (you can hear the real drums in a short snippet in 'Reclamation' and they sound AWFUL), so not sure what the point in that was.

Anyway, was thinking about this some more and.

Doing it this way is going to kill all and any groove your drummer has.

You're going to get a more natural performance, as well as better sounds, by just sample replacing everything.

Haha at the time Josh Wilber *wasnt it?* said there gonna be NO sample replacement anywhere on the kit. I said to Chris when I got a chance why didn't you just drumagog it and that would cut out all the bleed and he said something about sounding sampled, so I said well take samples of the kit your using first then trigger those later but it fell on deaf ears.

I felt abit weird trying to give advice to a pro :erk:

I recognise the snare from something in my sample library, I've got the raw thing, or at least the main sample. I like it and use it quite a bit.

I love that drum mix, I think that album has the best mix of anything in 09, but I found it odd to go through all that weird tracking just to end up replacing it all.

1:32 in 'Reclamation' has the real drums.
 
Kicks pretty decent but I was expecting something much different, because at the time Josh was saying how immense the kicks sound :S
 
done it once... sort of, programed shells and overdubbed cymbals and hated it.
All that bleed i normally moan about was missing; and it was horrible.
Back in the day when I did loads more metal; it was fairly common especially with drummers who were punching above their weight to not use their feet at all. program kick later. saved HOURS possibly days.
 
I've done this before but the drummer needs to be able to nail it down to the T!!!

I've actually recorded kick drum separate for a drummer because he could not play his double bass consistently enough. So he played the entire song without the double bass and then overdubbed the entire kick drum track in parts.

He could play to the click. I've also heard of programmed kick drums with the entire live kit played over it.

I'm sure there are tons of options, just as a musician you should be able to play that tight.
 
I've heard of this too. That's what they did for this song/album. I've been wanting to try it as well. seems to me like it would be hard for the drummer though, unless you had pads or mutes on everything

the first time you record, you gotta mute the cymbals with foam.

Why not the first take with real drums + e-drum cymbals and the second take with e-drum + real cymbals?

Wrath is a fucking incredible sounding album, utterly amazing. Seriously.

well yeah but I just put samples on the drums anyway so I don't really care about that - I guess if you want to keep some real drums then it would be a little different.
 
That's what I'm doing next time I have to track something...I've got a roland kit...but gonna do real cymbals...should sound pretty sweet.
