Anyone got any obscure prog metal recommendations?

I don't know if this would be obscure, but PA-Based Mastermind (with Jens Johannsson) has some real sick stuff.

Right how could I forgot Mastermind? Actually Jens plays in "Excelsior" and "Angels Of The Apoclypse" only, the four previous albums are basically the Berens brothers doing all with MIDI guitars and drums (and they're a lot ELP influenced).

Some other bands may include:

Acid Rain (SPA)
Adramelch (ITA)
Alkemyst (FRA)
Amaran's Plight (USA)
Dunwich (ITA)
Explorers Club (USA)
Gordian Knot (USA)
Helreid (ITA)
Isopoda (BEL)
Beyond The Labyrinth (BEL) = great band, highly recommended
Karmakanic (SWE)
Kurgan's Bane (USA)
Machiavel (BEL)
Moon Of Steel (ITA), but their second album mostly.
Platypus (USA)
Project Creation (BRA)
Saracen (UK), specially "Vox In Excelso"
Ten Jinn (SWE)
The Tangent (UK/SWE)
Time's Forgotten (CR)
Waterclime (SWE) = great stuff too

Good comparison Bear!!

Too bad the first CD is SO hard to find :(

Good suggestion!! Daniel is a stand up guy like you said. I'm still in his top friends and I haven't talked to him in a while.....LOL! You didn't mention that "Momentum Shift" has Oyvind and Asgeir from Spiral Architect as well as Steve DiGiorgio. It's the closest thing you'll find to Spiral Architect :headbang:

Check out Harmony and Degree Absolute as well.

I have other suggestions but my mind is blank at the moment....

Haha, I actually was curious if someone else on here knew of em'. I thought about plugging the names, but i figured that Dod's music speaks for itself! :headbang:

I freaking LOVE their cover of Death's "Symbolic". It is such an interesting take on the song!

The 2 greatest ever, Lemur Voice and Enchant, you cant go wrong. Paynes gray are also incredible as you say, extremely hard to find though.

Mark, good to see you here. It's been a while!!

If you haven't listened to Lemur Voice then I highly recommend it if you can still find their CD's!

Check out a new band I just heard via Prog Palace radio......Cloakwheel. Good stuff!! If anyone wants new Prog metal to check out I recommend listening to Prog Palace. I found numerous great bands that way :headbang:

Cannot believe no one has mentioned these...

Dalis Dilemma - Manifesto For Futurism
Ice Age - The Great Divide

I don't know if you're mainly into the standard Dream Theater/Symphony X style prog metal, or if you like other death/black metal influenced stuff, but i'd also recommend:

Theory in Practice
Scarve
Lux Occulta
Woods of Ypres

Here is some obscure band from Canberra, Australia

you can d/l a copy of our ep (links below)

I agree with Brother Vern on this one. I can't speak a lick of French, but Manigance is a very good band. Wyvern doesn't really even like prog so much.
Another good one I recommend is an indie band called Ascension Theory.

This really isn't extremely "proggy" but is more symphonic, but it IS prog-metal and is simplky good music.

Lastly, I would say Sieges Even. They are actually prog rock, not metal, but maybe being not quite metal they have fallen through the crack to some. They are.... well... incredible is the best I can give them to do justice.

My best recommendation will be Manigance (Fr). If you don't mind singing in French this band delivers a great progressive power metal (hell they SHOULD be at PPX)

Some other bands may appeal to you are:

Twinspirits
Darkwater
Scale the Summit
Tetrafusion
Arabesque

and I suppose you are already acquainted with Liquid Tension Experiment, Spastic Ink, Planet X

Also, gone but definitely not forgotten... Superior. :kickass:

....Not 'obscure' as they did play PPUSA once, but now defunct. At one time, along with DT and Symphony X, they comprised the third side of the progmetal triumvirate against which all other progmetal bands were judged. (By me, anyway. :))

As one of the dj types over at Prog Palace Radio, I can only say thanks and I really appreciate your praises of the station! Now that that has been said, I like to add some of the more obscure bands I really like:

Event (3 man kind of industrial prog metal)
Epicurean (kind of Scar Symmetry meets Into Eternity)
Agent Cooper
Collusion (great unsigned band from the LA area)
Dead Air Radio
Everwood
Flametal (flamenco guitar can be used in metal!)
Fractured Dimension (Ron Jarozembek, Marcel Coenen, Alex Arellano, Jimmy Pitts - 'nuff said!)
Icycore
Daniele Liverani (in all his incarnations)
Transmission
Akphaezya

and way, way too many more to mention. Y'all drop by and listen to the station if you get a chance.
Take care!
