I'm looking at investing in some good quality converters. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the apogee ones or can recommend better ones. I'm just looknig for 2 channels for right now. Nothing to big :)

I´ve just ordered an RME Adi-2 for the studio im at. It´s a AD/DA 2 channel converter.
The next step up would cost about 4 times more so it had to be the rme.

I've been eyeing this thing for months. Just got a Motu MKIII though.
Please let me/us know how it is!!!

Ok, i will. :)

It sure is a step up coming from m-audio converters. I compared it against my fireface
and the difference was huge soundwise.

Guess the adi-2 won´t sound worse than my fireface

I use a Rosetta 800 with a Big Ben word clock. The sound is amazing. It's quite expensive, but worth every cent.

The Rosetta 200 would be perfect for your application.

As for better, there are better, but they're 2-3x as much as the Apogees.

Much better converters are:

Lavry: Gold, Blue
Prism: AD2 and DA2
Cranesong: HEDD
Lynx: Aurora
Mytek

Some of these are REALLY expensive (Prism) some others are at about the same price as apogee.

Apogee's are very popular but the I've heard a few friends moaning about the building quality and reliability. They are also pretty overrated. I personally think they are not very transparent and and have a hyped low and high end. They are still a lot better than something like the converters in a Digi 002.

A lot of people are also talking about the Benchmark converters at the moment. I have not tried them but they seem really good for the price.

I advice you to go to your local store and demo different units before you buy. ;)

If you can afford around $3,000.00- go for the Cranesong Hedd 192k. Simply awesome for D.A.W.'s
I use an Apogee PSX-100SE /96k(The SE's have a better power supply) and although it's now a legacy product of Apogee. I'll never sale it. It just plain KICKS ASS. But when the time comes...... I'll grab the Cranesong Hedd. Don't be a cheap ass when it comes to converters:) They'll make or break you and your sound.
I remember when I got my PSX. Just got a 002 from the 001 the same week. The 002's converters were way better than the 001's...then we hooked up the PSX-100SE......the Apogees just blew the 002's converters out of the room! It was as if someone took a blanket off the (same) monitors!! That much of a difference!

If you are looking just for DAC's checkout the Benchmark DAC-1's!!!!! For AD/DA- Rosetta 200!! Or the Hedd! RME makes great stuff too, and the Motu is great for it's price. Remember it will be your systems heartbeat. (Clock)

good luck

I use a Mytek 8x96 for my mastering AD and DA conversions. Then I use the L2's built in DA for monitoring. The Myteks are extremely smooth and transparent. Cost me 6 grand for the 2 boxes. High end for sure. Probably more transparent than Apogee. BUT, I dont like monitoring with them. I prefer to use the 'cloudier' DA because it gives me what I feel is a more real world interpretation of the mix. With the Mytek the high end goes on forever and that 'added' top end seems to make the balance under represented in the mid lows. So by using the L2 DA which is still quite good, I like the way my final product turns out more.

Hope this helps. Oh by the way, Apogee is very nice with an apparent slight 200 hz bump that gives your sound a more 'rock and roll' or analog feel.

Colin

I've an 002 LE set up at home, but have been doing alot of work on HD in the studio recently. I've really started to notice the difference good converters makes. Hence why I'd like to make the investment of some for my home setup too :)

You asked about the adi-2 in the mastering topic so i´m answering in this one to avoid going off-topic.

It is pretty much what is expected it to be. It sounds like an rme fireface.
I can´t tell you if it´s better or worse than a apogee rosetta or prism or whatever since i don´t have one there for A / B comparing.
IMO if you just got a motu, you should look into something like apogee or better. Rme would leave you half-way, i mean, i guess it´s not worth the investment, coming from motu converters.

Mmmm, Judging from the price difference for the amount of channels alone I would assume that the RME would be far superior to my motu. Motu does sound really good though. I don't know, maybe you're right. Thanks for the info.
You don't seem to enthused over it. How do YOU like it?
I'm thinking you gotta love it. Right?

I can´t tell you much more. I´ll put it this way: i don´t have any personal experience with converters other than rme, m-audio and pro-tools hd.

I compared my RME fireface and an M-Audio 1814 as far as D/A is concerned and the fireface sounded much better. Never thought that there would be such a notorious difference to my ears since i´m not a Deutsche Gramofon Ton-Meister.... :)
