Arch Enemy--anthems Of Rebellions--review!!!

I dunno. I think for a lot of die-hard "death metal only" fans, they say that all power metal and thrash metal vocals sound the same. I listen to more death than thrash, but I can appreciate great death vocals as much as I can appreciate great thrash vocals. Plus, there is such a crossover nowadays between both genres...look at Chuck on Demonic for example.

The new Arch Enemy is their worst so far. The vocals aren't as good as on Wages, and the solos are not as impressive as on all other releases by Arch Enemy. I still like it a lot anyway though.

On a side note, I can't play the bonus audio DVD in my computer, PS2, or X Box, does anyone else have that problem?

~I've only listened to the album a couple times but yes I am disappointed. Then again I thought Wages of Sin was a disappointment until yesterday. There isn't much difference between the two and I miss the more in your face sound and classic rock melodies of Burning Bridges.

~As for the DVD disc, I've had no trouble playing it in my PS2. Bear in mind that it is all audio DVD and there's no video at all. The disc is all region so it should play anywhere. But if it's some other problem, your PS2 might be getting old and may not "want" to play DVDs anymore. Sony in all their craftiness build all of their hardware electronic shit to break as soon as the warranty expires. I've even heard that someone was taking them to court over that.

~Mindinsane hit the nail in the fucking head btw. As a result of my getting bored with the Tomas Lindburg or just Death vocal style in general, I'm appreciating Soilwork and In Flames much more.

I've thought about this a lot..because I find myself getting really bored with that particular genre..and here's what I came up with. Back in the thrash heyday the music was similar, but the vocals were all different. Everyone had their own style on the voice end of things..therefore you could tell them apart and it kept things more interesting. The death metal vox are all so similar that sometimes it's hard to tell the bands apart...or want to listen pick up more bands cds. I'm not knocking the melodic death metal..just offering my take on why people get burned out on it.

MI, you gotta listen to darkest hour then. the vocals arent like any in the "melodic death" genre. They remind most of obituary (best DM vocals ever). the vocals really set these guys apart from others, and they're killer too :headbang:

I LOVE obituary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have to check Darkest Hour out! Thanks Bob:wave:

I just picked this album up...really fucking good. The opening track is probably the best; the title song is kinda weak, but other than that, solid through and through. They've got some riffs in there that sound like SoP-era Death, some that sound like classic Maiden, some that sound like thrash Megadeth...good stuff all around. Thanks for the recommendations, all who made them.

ARCH ENEMY Singer Addresses Sellout Accusations: 'We Want To Bring Our Music To Everybody' - Sep. 1, 2003
ARCH ENEMY singer Angela Gossow recently spoke to Katie Vrabel of the Valley Advocate about accusations of sellout from some of the group's "fans," allegations that come with even modest success for an underground band. Of the band's "new" sound, which is really not far removed from their old, Gossow said, "People criticize, but, yeah, we are aiming for being more mainstream. We are aiming for some more money, because you have to live. I mean, I live in a super-small flat, sharing it with my little sister. I'm 28 — how long do I want to do this?

"People just complain when SLIPKNOT fans get into ARCH ENEMY, because they want to have this elitist thing, like: 'This is my band — I don't want to share it with nu-metal kids.' But we want to bring our music to everybody, and we want people to love the music, buy our albums and support the band. It doesn't mean we are turning into NICKELBACK. I haven't seen us on heavy rotation on MTV, so I guess we haven't really sold out that badly. People don't really see which way it goes. Either a band exists and they are going to need to make some money with it, or the band is not going to exist anymore."

Gossow joined ARCH ENEMY in time to record 2001's "Wages of Sin" but was not involved with the writing process. Things have changed dramatically since then, and ARCH ENEMY has just released a new album, "Anthems of Rebellion".

"I just joined right before 'Wages of Sin', so that wasn't really my music," said Gossow. "I liked it a lot, but I wasn't involved in the whole process, I didn't understand how the things came together, how this band was working. I found out later that this band wasn't really working together before I joined. They were like a project. They had been more like five individual people getting together to make some music and then running off to do their other projects, and now it's like it's a band, a good team. Everybody has got his job in the band and his place, and it works really well."

Three years, world tours, hundreds of shows and countless interviews later, Gossow says there is still the girl-in-a-band crap to deal with: "I hear the: 'Oh, they just got that chick in the band because it's a good gimmick thing,' but that doesn't work. If you are in a band like us, we tour we're going to play 250 shows. If it was a gimmick I would already be out of the band. Because it's tough, and not only for females. It's tough on everybody, and a lot of people leave bands because they can't stand touring. Here I've been in the band for three years, I'm working my ass off, I get sick on every fucking tour, I do it anyway. I've given up my job, my old life — I just moved for this band. I mean, how much more can you do for a band?" Read more.

Even though I love Arch Enemy, I think the new one is not really good at all. But then again, every band puts out sub par albums, let's hope the next one is back to their levl of unique genius.

EXACTLY MY POINT WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT A BAND SELLING OUT

"I hear the: 'Oh, they just got that chick in the band because it's a good gimmick thing,' but that doesn't work.

OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES, EVERYONE'S GOT ONE.....ANGELA KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE IT :)

I've finally had the chance to hear most of this album... and my conclusion is:

LOVE IT. The GUITARS RULE (shred is NOT dead!), but... "some" of the vocals (just some)... are hard for me to listen to. I'm not a big fan of that kind of singing (no disrespect to Angela of course). I will prolly get used to it!

I DIG THIS DISC! noticably less aggressive, but still very heavy and nowhere near a sell-out of any sort. I agree that the vocals are not quite as good as W.O.S, but she sounds just like little Jeffy Walker (CARCASS), like he had a sex change or something...he's one of my fave metal voices btw, along with the two CHUCKS, Warrel, and Kenn Nardi from ANACRUESIS. My fave tracks so far are #6, "leader of the rats". #9 "despicable heroes" and #11 "dehumanization". My only real complaint is similar to some of yours...not quite fast enough. Just three barn-stormers that speed from start to finish would have made this an all-time classic instead of just a good cd.
