Arch Enemy -Rise of the Tyrant

All I can say is I listened to the first few songs on the album before I left for work today & I really fucking liked it. Pretty good shit.

At first glance I think if this album can keep interesting enough throughout it might wind up being my favorite album by them at the moment as I'm worn out on most of their older stuff. I always seemed to have some problems with every one of their albums & I don't have any problems with the first few tracks off the new album so far.

Haha I know. That and Soulwork. At least the Soulwork page told me that they arnt a mallcore band and that I should check them out.

Yeah, but Arch Enemy aren't MallCore. They're more MeloDeath in sound I would say, even though I wouldn't lump them in with that whole scene really. I've never been really too crazy about them, but those tracks I listened to today were pretty damn good.

I'm sorry, but I can't stand how this sounds, or why they didn't go for a milder production.

It's aesthetically heavy as fuck - the guitars are brutal and downtuned to hell, vocals processed and distorted and the drums are piercing - without the music being THAT brutally heavy at all. The sound almost borders on brutal death or black metal and it drains all the life and fun from the music. The music is kinda great but the grating production ... it's the same feeling as listening to 32kbps mp3s of Beethoven symphonies.

It's not the production per se but the fact they used it in this particular release. It is not the type of music that calls for ultra processed vocals, piercing drums and an ear busting guitar sound. It might be good production for Bloodbath but not AE.

Well, I even had stated in another thread that nobody would "want" a band to retain their sound all throughout their career. It's good to keep a signiature sound & all, but I wouldn't want them to put out 7 albums just like Burning Bridges. I like production changes between albums myself.

I can't wait to listen to this one some more.
