From the first Arch/Matheos gig a few days ago at the Keep It True festival in Germany

:yow: Incredible! Arch is still the king.

That is what I wanted to see at Progpower. If John had showed up it would have made setting through that painfully struggling Fates Warning set worth it. Damn John is amazing. Just from watching this you can feel how powerful that was.
Now whoever is doing the really bad backing vocals should have something thrown at them.

I wasn't at ProgPower X for Fates set, BUT I was at their Parallels Reunion show in Hartford a couple of years ago, and if by "painful" you're talking about Ray's voice, I would have to agree. His voice is totally shot from years of smoking. Listening to him try to sing "Face the Fear" was excruciating. I do feel that his voice is better suited to Redemption now and I'm looking forward to their set at ProgPower this year!

Painfully struggling Fates Warning set? Seriously? In my opinion, one of the best headliners in Progpower history. Absolutely fantastic.

Agreed! I will be forever thankful that I got to see them play Progpower. Fates is one of those bands that I never had a chance to see...

^ this. and their song selection was pretty weak at PP in my opinion. They have a few moments of "ooohhhhh" but i was disappointed. But, again I had seen them in Philly on the "Perfect Symmetry" tour so it was hard for them to live up to my expectations, admittedly. haha.

I was at both Fates shows at ProgPower X and in Hartford, CT. While Ray's voice is clearly not the same, I thought he wasn't *that* bad.

The only thing that I loathe about that show in Hartford (as Matt and I have mentioned before over and over, and I'll never live it down), is the 105+ temperature inside the Webster Theater...

Ugh!!!! It shouldn't be too bad Saturday! Still...I'm wearing shorts! :flame::flame::hotjump::hotjump:

at 1:02 chills ran down my back.

OMG.

see, this is what 'Keeping It True' is all about.

And I'm secure enough in my masculinity to admit that by the 3-minute mark I am ready to shed a tear.

Good God we need this at ProgPower.

Rays voice is not what it once was, but has he really ever blown anyone away in a live setting? I've seen them 7 times and I always walked away disappointed by his vocals, even though he is my favorite singer of all time.
John Arch sounds amazing! But, even he cant hit the high notes anymore. He still sounds great, but its kinda a Bruce Dickinson situation. His lower range by age just doesn't move me like his early aga range.
Last thing. Painfully struggling Fates Warning set??? That was fucking killer! They were on top of their game, you must not be a Fates Warning fan if you thought it was that bad

I have many Fates Warning live boots and all the DVD releases and I never thought they were all that live. Matter of fact seemed pretty boring. Each time I would watch the shows or see a new one I would always be hoping for it to grab me but it never did.
I have known people to feel this way about the band's albums, though personally I really like them, probably have more copies of the albums then needed. (yes I know Justin that you are thinking "and why do you have 2 or 3 copies of each one)

I tried. I really tried. I have *never* liked John Arch's voice, but I gave one of the live videos a try. The first couple minutes ... actually weren't bad. I'm impressed he's kept his voice this long when most of the other high-note singers that have been around as long as he has have blown them out to the point where those notes are unreachable.

And then he started wailing, and it was like nails on blackboard all over again.

Have you never listened to the Awaken The Guardian album front to back? Arguably one of the best progressive/power metal albums of all time, due in part to Mr. Arch.

Anyone else with me on this? I cannot be alone.
