This compilation puts together all of the songs from 1989's Test of Strength and 1990's Between Light and Shadow.
Musically, the songs are based around tight musicianship, catchy riffs and energetic vocals typical of power metal in the United States during the 1980s. Marselle is the real star of the band, with extremely powerful riffcraft and very tasteful soloing. He is absolutely underrated and easily stands with other greats of the USPM scene. Parisi's vocals are extremely spirited. While he isn't a stunning vocalist, he has enough attitude and energy to more than make up for any shortcomings. The rhythm combo of Hosman and Giacari is very powerful as well.
Powerful songs such as "Infernal Dynasty" and "Test of Strength" take lyrical inspiration from Michael Moorcock. Other songs such as "Hell Hath No Fury" and "Crimson Streets" focus on more typical metal themes such as women and life on the streets. No matter the theme, songs like these are really Arioch's bread and butter and really give the band, and Marselle in particular, a chance to show what they can do. The entire band just sounds like they're having a great time playing heavy metal. It is worth noting that "Through the Shadows" is definitely the weakest song on this collection, being a more commercial sounding ballad that lacks the edge of the other material.
It's a shame that there are so many great heavy metal bands that have now faded into obscurity. Arioch is no exception. It's essential listening for fans of old school USPM.
