MOSSFISH

and more here; so much more. and all mind-bending.

but it is sick that they are all dead.

yes yes! I remember last week when the story broke that hundreds of new species had been found off Australia. If I can find the article again I'll link it - it mentioned something about (this is probably inaccurate) that only just now were scientists able to explore biological systems off Australia because of some kind of new technology. What was it?? What was the new technology?

I need to start remembering to post these things.

Aso, I have seen photos of coffinfish that look like they actually are made of cratered stone, or rather have a stone-like carapace protecting that bulbous part of their body you see there.

OK, yes, yes that's right - it was an article about NORFANZ (a little reading of the text on the page Nick linked refreshed me) - but I'm still trying to think of the explanation I read for why such an expedition couldn't have, or didn't, happen long ago.

In any case, these shrimp look yummy:

If you guys are not reading the decriptions, please please do so.

Regarding the anemone hermit crabs and zonathid.
It is not known how this union starts but it’s possible that the two get together from a small size and grow up helping each other out."

That's so cute!!

Holy shit the humpback angler description is INCREDIBLE:

The male is completely different. He’s very small and looks like a black jellybean with fins. He has no lure, has big eyes, huge nostrils and a fairly small mouth with curved hooked teeth. His body is made of strong red muscle for swimming long distances. Why the difference? She’s looking for food, he’s looking for her. She releases anglerfish-type perfumes into the water and he spends all his time swimming around looking and smelling for her. When he eventually finds her (in the dark), he latches on to her side (with his hooked teeth) and drinks her food-rich blood in return for producing the sperm she needs when it comes time to release her eggs.

i have to say, that is one of the greatest websites i've ever seen.

i don't understand why network execs aren't scrambling to air this on primetime. this is as close to an alien race as we've gotten.

furthermore, if i were those scientists OR those fish i would be quite pissed when there is endless footage of the first real alien lifeforms which probably won't appear half as interesting as these fellas/ladies.

and there certainly won't be commentary half as charming. just the catholic clergy denouncing them as fake and the sounds of civilization crumbling or drooling at the prospect of incorporating them into videogames.
