Audio Backup Drive

I've got a question. I have a Seagate SATA -II 3.0Gb/s 156 Gb Hard Drive connected inside my comp where I store Pt's Projects. Recently I got a Lacie Hard disk Usb Terabyte this one

I also have my library's for certain plugins and standalones like kontakt ect. ect.

My question is which one would be preferred to use. Now I know there's other better faster ones. That's not my question. Of these two Is the Sata II (Oldish I know) or USB 2.0 better or faster for storage considering Pt has to get the library's, impulses, and send audio there in real time.

external drives are not really all that good... i use them sometimes to store old sessions or samples etc. but in terms of tracking, sample library buffering etc. they just are not fast enough.

don't waste your money on gimpy usb drives.

While internal drives are always better for speed/data access I wouldn't necessarily say don't ever use a USB drive. I currently have all my samples loaded on my external USB drive and while the project load time is slightly slower it still works perfectly fine. I have no problems using it until I can get more internals. Up until a month or two ago, I even recorded directly to a USB external drive and it worked flawlessly, although, I never recorded more than a few tracks at a time.

Having said that, don't shy away from using an external if you are worried about performance because it will work, you will just get better results from an internal once you can afford to have dedicated drives for system/samples/record/etc.

the cache on external drives are much slower... not to mention the buffer speed in a retail ext hdds are mostly slower as well. the most ridiculous concept is the price; over $100 for an external usb/firewhateverthundtfuib;cowvn drive is outrageous. you can purchase a 1tb 7,200rpm 32mb cache (oem) drive for $50.

so what does this mean? ...you are paying close to 100% more for a garbage enclosure with a slow performance drive in it.

stop wasting money on external hdd's and save up the cash to purchase an optimized desktop machine (mac/windows/whatever) and pump it full of high performance, optimized (CHEAPER) large capacity hard drives.

in my experience, external hdds have never solved any performance problems... they cause them.

they are good for one thing (if that), storing old files.

i always keep 2 external firewire drives and backup at the end of every session. reason being i've had backup drives fail before my main drives.

I don't think anyone is debating that an internal drive is always the best option for performance and reliability nor do I think anyone was inferring that an external would solve any kind of problem. I (only speaking for my post) was simply stating that he shouldn't not use an external if he has one to use until he can afford to have those dedicated drives like I mentioned.

Haha, true. And after reading my last post, I hope I didn't come across as an asshole. That wasn't my intention.

To sum it all up, diet Dr. Pepper does NOT taste like regular Dr. Pepper. That was the issue, right?

Pretty much this. I have a 120GB SSD and a 7200-rpm 1TB HDD in my tower, but I still find external drives useful. I only posted my opinion.
