Does anyone automate their release times?
The idea is to set the release time so that the compressors only compresses until the next snare hit.
with metal, I think we have the biggest problem of all genres, we mostly have blast beats and slow snare beats in one song.

so lets say you have a 8th note blast beat at 250bpm. thats 8.3 hits per second and one hit is 120ms. so say the attack is 20ms, that would leave you with 100ms (or less) release.
now if you have a slow passage, you might want a release at maybe 500ms.
..

how do you guys deal with this?

Yep been doing this for quite some time now (tons of death metal). Didn't have too many choices back in the day, like 2001,'02. But now a lot more compressors sound
okay automating them.

Waves H-comp gives you the chance of combining the release time with the tempo of the song, so you can have it 100% exact

Actually manual setting the release and using automation is the most exact you can get. Setting to a tempo is general as it's not taking musical divisions into consideration just an overall velocity.

as I said, it matches the tempo of the song and you can select if it's 1/64 up to 1/2 notes, and so, you can automate it.

Keep in mind that when you start playing quick snare hits together the percieved volume of the snare increases, so it might actually be desireable for the compressor to not fully release before the next hit. Almost act's like automation in that it pulls down the volume of the snare in faster sections.
