Back in my day, It was all the shiznit for the kids to play 'one' and
'master' and most of em couldn't play the leads just the cheap ass
tablature because they couldn't read music.
Appears as though it's gotten worse.

damnnn.

yeah - i really hate all that... - i mean, it's no problem for people to not be good at guitar - but when you're not and you act like you are - or you think dressing a certain way makes you look like you are ... well, that's just gay.

I can read music, but, sadly, I can't apply it to the guitar - I'm taking steps to rectify that at my university though, so I should have a handle on that shit in under a month.

Other than that I'm a technical guitarist - I've got all my modes runnin smooth and a bunch of different techniques to whip out - plus I'm a huge improvisor, I love to make shit up.

Oh yeah, and when I go for tabs - I head straight for the hard shit first - that way if I never take the time to learn the full song, I've got the best part goin on and I can assimilate that into my playing.

Avatar - some squid alien thing, from metal slug. People like to call it boobies..

sig - The infamous 4-man headbanging fury, even warrel said it was a stupid idea.
tis the old sanctuary doods.

And a message of the return of the green llamas.

Avatar and Sig both have pictures from the "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" series "childrens" books (i put that in quotes because so many stores and places file them under childrens yet the pictures are literally famous for being so fucking scary to kids).... the Avatar pic just looked good for an av, and the Sig pic I chose in paticular because that picture gave me nightmares for years, along with another one thats pretty gross, i don't think i'd want to put it in my sig.... i also have a listen-to because I like to keep track and let other people see what i'm currently listening to.... the song of the week was my favorite song of the week.... and the "fuck elitists" thing is just how it sounds, fuck elitists, I hate them, assholes are the worst part of metal in general, the "nu-metal fags" they always like to stereotype are far more mature than elitists

Hehe, Scary stores to tell in the dark fucking scared me as a kid, those drawings freaked me out... Now I love them.

I respect anyone who can play. When I was a teenager I took over
a year of classical guitar and learned to read sheet music. If I practiced
well, I could play anything, but I could never just hear a song and then
play it. Anyone who can do that, I respect. This will sound strange,
but it was always harder for me to play metal songs I loved like
Crazy Train and shit, than it was to play classical. I dunno why, I
guess I'm retarted or something. If you're in guitar center trying to
act like your a god on the thing when you can't play shit, that's what
annoys me. Usually the easiest Metallica stuff to play from that time,IMO,
was the open notes of "one" and "master" and so it's like in Wayne's World
when Wayne picks up a guitar and the salesman points to "NO STAIRWAY
TO HEAVEN" ....all the dorks were playing the same stuff. Once in a while,
I'd see some dude who stood there and played and looked at the ground
the whole time and that was cool. Someone who enjoyed it without
having to posture for attention. I used to go into GC all the time
and look at the guitars and pick them up but I never played a note
cause I didn't think I had the stuff. Eventually, I liked smoking weed
more than practicing so I quit. I figured, I'm not Iommi, I'll never be
Iommi so I'll leave it someone else.

yah - i've always been able to just listen to something and know where it is - two things that help with that I've found are - oddly enough - air guitaring, and playing in the dark or with your eyes closed. And yeah, whenever I go into a store and play I just keep my mouth shut, play what I like, and leave, but usually people drop compliments and that's really cool - It certainly does brighten my day! Im not an attention whore and sometimes its a tad embarrasing but the people are generally very nice and flattering and I'm down with that.

I've also been known to give little "mini-lessons" to younger kids b/c I think that's fun - and I have a few valuable things to show to them.

I can read sheet music for guitar good...as long as it doesn't involve chords...becaue the first instrument I learned was clarinet and I played that for seven years and I also played alto sax for a year. So learning standard notation helped. If I had to read sheet music with chords, I'd have to sit there a minute and figure it out first.

I went into the accoustic guitar section, dressed as I normally am (leather jacket, metal band t-shirt, jeans, scruffy looking, unshaven) and I picked up a classical guitar. I know what this guy (clean cut old dude with a grey beard) is probobly thinking... so I pick up a guitar, shed the leather jacket and start playing out this incredibly fast piece of classical music. The guy is like " :OMG: " and when I finish he says something like: "Wow! you're a PLAYER! not a BASHER!"

best day ever.

I love proving those sort of guys wrong

I'll go in there with my Nevermore or Emperor shirt on and start playing Al DiMeola or some really cool jazz licks

indeed..

i started playing guitar and then picked up classical guitar and bought one for myself so i could play in a quartet with my friends... when i went back to playing "normal" guitar (as people so often called it) i was so much better... i didn't like the classical stuff so much, but it helped my playing so much... i could sort of read music... and the finger picking helped a lot too

my avatar is the cowcoptor from homestarrunner.com

my sig is my familys coat of arms

yes, I played classical for about a year and it really gave me better technique, and it makes for a good relaxation every once in a while, as well as its obvious merit for fucking with people's minds and stereotypes :D

yeah...that's why I started playing classical guitar was because I knew it would help me with my metal

I need to go back to learning it...I've been focusing on Jazz nonstop for the past month and a half (I'm in the jazz band at school)
