Backing up your project

Hey guys. I am in dire need of backing up my projects, just in case a virus hits my PC. But I don't know which files exactly I need to back up onto the external hard drive. Any help?
 
Back up EVERYTHING. I create a folder for my audio projects, and subfolders inside that folder with each project. Back up everything or you'll be kicking yourself in the ass if you lose stuff!
 
Personally I keep 3 types of backups. A ghost of the base installed OS. A ghost of the OS + drivers and apps installed in stable state. And finally a backup of the data, I keep MD5 sums of every file in a text file in case something corrupts. I keep 2 copies, one at home the other offsite. Swap it out periodically for a more current one. I use Backblaze for cloud backups.
 
Yes, don't let what happened to me earlier this year happen to you. Backup everything, and at least one backup should be on a completely different drive.
 
I guess I just don't know how to go about backing up the files.
Is there a system that does it automatically, or if you have to do it yourself whattaya do?
Just copy and paste?

what I usually do is I back everything up like said earlier, however I make a layout of all of my tracks.

I store all of my presets that were used on that track in the folder and make a spreadsheet documenting what went were on what part for how long. It is a painstaking process but when you loose something you can always get that sound back with notes and presets made.

most of you have been doin this a lot longer than me though so you probably got a better way of doing stuff.
 
I would get a big external drive, or a few, it doesn't matter... and back every single file up, and then make sure they are all backed up properly by checking file folder size's on you're hard disk and external. It's what i do and i haven't had any files missing or any errors yet.
 
Relying on reported file/folder sizes is counter intuitive and is frankly asking for trouble. The MD5 hash checking is much more of a solid choice.
 
I have dozens upon dozens of external hard drives that I use for backups. I backup everything on all of my business related computers (3 of them currently) weekly onto them... Worked amazingly so far. I have never had a HD failure, but just in case, my business cannot afford to lose anything :)
 
How 'bout two physical hard drives in RAID1 configuration? Data is stored on both drives simultaneously and identically, so if one drive dies you have the exact copy... And once you set it up you don't need to do anything (no manual and periodical back ups), it just works in that mode continuously.
