End of the Public Use Doctrine:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- -- The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that local governments may seize people's homes and businesses -- even against their will -- for private economic development.

End of Internet porn:

Yes, that is correct. The wonderful things that used to be here, the
very funny things that you want to read, have been made retroactively
illegal by the US government, in a side-handed attack on the pornography
industry.

We might mention that the material here isn't even pornography as you
normally think of it -- this site is just adult humor, in essay format,
with some illustrations. The government is mandating that we meet
certain bookkeeping requirements, ones impossible to meet for this site.
Never mind that those requirements do not actually gain the public
anything. This is the strongest attack on free speech since the passage
of the CDA, and oddly, the media seems to have hardly noticed. The
penalty for not abiding by these bookkeeping requirements is five years
prison.

The regulations were promulgated by Alberto Gonzales, US Attorney
General appointed by George Bush. If you voted for Bush, this is your
fault. If you think this country is free, you are sadly mistaken. No
nation has freedom when it is run by religious zealots.

Regulations effective 24 June 2005.

BUSH'S AMERICA

I also want to point out that this is the Democrats' fault, too. The eminent domain decision was 5-4 with conservatives voting AGAINST it. The porn and flag-burning stuff could not succeed without Democrat support. But I think Bush deserves a lot of blame because of the culture of "fuck liberty" he's fostered under his reign that made this possible/acceptable.

I've been particularly pissed off at America today, reading the shit about eminent domain back east and the flag burning thing. But now porn? Oh man that one REALLY hits home.

4 more years!

small chance of it actually getting ratified this time around. but it's still part of a larger process that goes back at least to 1995 when this came up for the first time. passing the senate now will send a message that will resonate ten years down the line when this comes up AGAIN.

additionally, when it goes to the states for ratification, it could cause political damage to those who oppose it, which could help the republicans in 2008...

Don't speak too soon avi, if the Canadian political scene doesn't clear up and the liberals fail to win back the trust of the people, there's a good chance we'll end up with Bush copycats in the government come the new year...
