Bad day for liberty

As always dad the lawyer comes through as the voice of sweet moderated reason on the eminent domain case. I said something to the effect of "Yeah, building a highway to serve the downtown of a community directly benefits the businesses there, but this is just falling in the pocket of a single party!" and he responded
"Well how about building a highway that only serves a single factory? These lines are not so easy to draw."

He was also totally unsurprised that the Dem members of the SC were in the majority...

well it's not like it was much different before, they used to just like, starve people out and destroy their jobs. now they're taking a more direct route? fuck it.

yea why get sentimental about your property, just take the money i mean, it'll only be like... 1/3 of the retail sale value but whatever i mean it's GOVERNMENT MONEY so that's like added patriotic bonus and shit! TAKE IT!

Box schfourteen: if you were unjustly excavated from your property and poorly compensated, please complete with dollar amount. This is considered taxable income.

I'm not saying it doesn't suck! I am saying it's not like they're stripping people naked and throwing them into the desert

If the government were smart, they'd pay well over the blue-book value of the property, to torpedo the legitimacy of arguments like Amanda's (which has been true in the past. Not sure if they wised up and are paying more nowadays or not).

yeah, it's still fucked up to lose a house you don't want to sell/leave, but if it's worth 1.2 million and you get 2 million for it, that eases the sting. and it's not like the government can't afford the bonus pay when they're doing this for deep-pocketed corporations like Wal-Mart anyway.
