I don't know about you guys but I have this weird affection and love for music that is badly produced and performed. Also I like aesthetically poor cover art :Spin: This is in total contrast to the fact that I love slick over-produced stuff like Survivor/TOTO and the art of Travis Smith or Eliran Kantor :grin:

Take Swiss thrashers CARRION for example. Their sole album "Evil is There!" (1986) has crappy coverart; no production value what-so-ever and the musicianship is FAR below par. Thing is though that I LOVE the cover, I adore the horrific production and the sloppy musicianship is just brilliant! Not to mention the vocals which are...just weird.

Then again, if the songs sucked the album would of course be a pile of dogshit. But the songs rule in my opinion! :Smokin:

Am I retarded? Please don't answer that question :loco:

I am extremely picky, but in ways that seem to be only my own. hahaha.

But this is an album which I love, but thought the production, especially the mix was weird. I randomly sent it to Jamie King to listen to it and he said it was never mastered. He said the album was mixed FOR mastering but it was unmastered when released on CD. Which explains a lot. I love this album, and wanted to reissue it, but I was warned that the main guy was a little "off" apparently. So I stopped trying. Oh, and the cover is pretty terrible.

Gonna have to say for 1986, production on that crappy video quality audio isn't terrible. it's more the performance takes. again, it's not the worst i have heard from that era but it's not great.

I may be way off on what this is about but I'll give it a shot.
I personally go both ways though I tend to lend more to what I know is pretty bad quality, bad art, etc. I think that partially the reason is that it takes me back to a good place in my life when the discovery was everything. Not only that but I also became sick of overly produced and polished albums; this is why I can't dig a lot of newer power metal and prog metal bands. It seems that all personality is taken away and replaced with machines. I suppose it is like the vinyl sound vs. CD argument to some existent.
I love terrible 80s artwork, I look for that and the worse it is it is almost like an automatic sale to me. Look at the 'Forgotten Realms, Hard n Heavy, and US Metal series- I love that stuff. You could tell that it was total DIY and there was heart that went into it no matter how bad it was. This was/is so important because after all rock n roll is about feeling not Pro-tools.
I know there are others who share this effection with me, think they are all in Germany though. HAHA And see this is why I know ten years from know Praetorius will be highly sought out by Europeans; their type of metal, under produced, and terrible cover - but no one could deny the heart that was there certainly after seeing them live.
