I'm going to consider the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and the surrounding towns:
Ossuary- Great, heavy death metal band that broke up some time in the mid 1990s. They often played at Sea Sea's in Moosic
The Kindred- This band was made of some of my friends; they mixed black metal, doom, technical stuff, melodic death metal, etc.
8- They released their debut album "The Pelican" in 1996. It was a mix of grindcore, black metal, and funk, with songs about metaphors, trees and Dr. Pepper.
Nimbus-
www.2nimbus.com This was a band I used to play bass for; they're not living in my area anymore, though. The site should have some mp3s. This band is hard to describe-maybe Devo meets L7 or something.
Modern Crucifixion-They were from Tunkhannock (little hick town) but they played in my area a lot. They were a pretty good goth band.
Sting Ray- Much-respected blues guitarist that plays a lot of clubs around here.
Tower of Set- Sludge/doom; they broke up a while ago, but they opened for Bongzilla once.
