Hey, I'm posting this for someone who isn't a member, (since it wouldn't be worth the effort of signing up, though you guys are the best source of recommendations).

he lists as favorites:
queensryche
helloween
drain s.t.h
a-ha
anthrax
(though the latter three far less beloved.)

what d'ya reckon?

He might like Avantasia. The two metal opera cd's are good. Didnt care much for the single from the scarcrow album so I never cheked that one out.

If he likes Anthrax maybe he should try the other thrash stuff from the same time. That is the 80's Megadeth, Metallica, Testament or maybe newer Kreator? If he likes the Bush era of Anthrax I dont know any similar bands though.

pertaining to the first two..four must haves, old and new:

Fates Warning - Awaken the Guardian
Labyrinth - Return to Heaven Denied
Crimson Glory - Crimson Glory
Gamma Ray - Land of the Free

and then, oddly enough, since you said he likes A-ha..

Keldian - Heaven's Gate/Journey of Souls (either album)

Dark sci-fi power metal with strong Euro AOR/new wave influence.

As for Drain s.t.h. they were very influenced by Alice in Chains. Tell him to try them out. Quality band.
