Bands similar to Threshold

IMO, Vanden Plas doesn't even come close. They are more into the theatrics and in the vein of the DT/SX type bands. I just saw them live in Munich a few days after I saw Threshold and the divide couldn't be larger than those two, in particular.

I recently wrote a short accompanyment to some pics I took of Threshold and part of it contained the point that Threshold is one of the few bands in the prog-metal realm that can NOT be easily compared to the mainstays. They just do things their way and focus more on the song and the idea than the roles of the individual members and who gets the most spotlight just because.

If there's something that I can say about what one may like as a fan of Threshold, I'd give it to Cynthesis. It has 3/4 of the original members of Zero Hour, including the amazing Erik Rosvold on vocals again. However, the music is unlike Zero Hour, except in places, and they appear to put focus on the song first, rather than the out of control embellishments. However, if that's what you liked about Zero Hour, they are certainly there in places. Their first two albums (of the trilogy yet to be completed) are among my favorite albums for their respective years.

In some respects, what Threshold continues to do is brave for a prog metal band because they don't do what is expected of typecasted bands in their category- the wild, out of control wanking and fighting for spotlights, though it's very evident the talent each member has (especially on stage). They appear to not let their roles go out of control if it threatens the entire composition.

Very cool concepts behind these albums and you can get more information about the concepts from the Zero Hour forum.

I used to spend lots of time on this forum years ago. Sucks to see it so quiet, but that's what social media does.
