Bass Guitar

So I'm looking to buy one. I have 2 projects. 1 extreme metal... and the other one we will be trying to make beautiful spiritual music, mixed with some elements of metal, especially in the drumming.

Anyways, I'm getting a bass. Will one bass do the job? I mean are all basically the same? Anything I need to know before I get one? The guy I spoke to at the store said a cheap bass will do the job just fine and getting an expensive one is really not necessary - is that true?

I was looking into a Yamaha 170 I think it was. Good choice? And also what effects do you hear normally on bass? I want that warm beautiful sound, not the funky pop sound...

Well, if your just starting i strongly recommended the Ibanez Sr300dx or the gsr300.both are under 300 and both are good, also esp makes some good cheap models as does schecter.What exactly is your budget?
