Do you prefer bass within the music or do you like the bass to really sound louder so you can hear it well?

I prefer the bass to be audible when the part is worth hearing. When the bass parts are unoriginal, as is often the case, not much is lost.

Those Once Loyal, None so Vile, In a Flesh Aquarium and Obscura are good examples of albums with audible bass. Loud bass is good in old school death particulary.

I like it.

im a bass player, so i like bass. but not too much bass like in rap. enough so you can hear the basslines when they differ from the guitar

I like phat bass and I cannot lie. All you other brothers can't deny. Big phat basslines make a heavy riff sound a whole new dimension of heavy.

That said, I dunno about having the bass "really sound louder so you can hear it well", there is such a thing as too much.

Unfortunately though, with a lot of metal (especially older school stuff), the bass is almost non existant in the mix.

The bass in Kyuss is muddy as hell, with about 10 layers of fuzz and distortion on it, so I don't know what you're on about there, but yeah I agree that clear & driving is the way to go.
