That's like almost a 180 degree difference from what they are now. When I saw them years ago, they didn't play this stuff.

Nocturnal Rites always was a cool band. First song I ever heard from them was "Pentagram." Really liked Secret Sphere too. Never heard of them. Fairyland is what they call "flower metal?" Interesting. That's a new term for me. It was cool though.

You can never go wrong with Blind Guardian or Helloween. People have introduced me to Lost Horizon before. Very talented. I liked the Green Carnation stuff too.
This stuff sounds so good. I have to unwrap their latest album (bought it a while ago with Testament's latest album) and take a listen as well as a slew of other albums that I bought at the same time.

No, actually you wouldn't want to call Fairyland "flower metal", the correct term for it would be "Symphonic Power Metal." The only reason why some people call it "flower metal" is because they mean to imply that it's not heavy enough and because it has so many keyboards, choirs and orchestras it's "pretty like a flower." So yeah, better to stick to calling it Symphonic Power Metal

Nothing Blind Guardian have done since "A Night At the Opera" has been as good, that album was a pure gem. I remember reading that some of the songs on it were so complex that it was technically impossible to perform them live, now that's what you call attention to detail

They're not bad, but they never really blew me away either when I listened to them years ago. Maybe I should give them another listen, any song recommendations?

I've decided that I like progressive metal that's just on the border of the metal genre. The role of a progressive group is to reach out as far as they can into other music while keeping their feet on the edge of that genre.
Perfect example? Giant Squid. Loads of other influences, but definitely still a metal group.

I liked the Dragonland track! Ensiferum I have heard of before. Some cool stuff. I got a Sabaton vibe from that song. Wintersun, I like! I know they have been around for a bit - very talented.
