I wish to record bass. However i do not have access to one. Im not looking for super high end quality bass. Rather just a basic sound to fill in the low end for a quick idea im having. Any freeware you guys may know of?

Alright cool well i just used an octave pedal with some light distortion and a sub octave very very lightly and it got the job done thanks fellas

+1 there really is no substitute... I used to pitch shift guitar too, but it just doesn't sound right.
Buy a cheap bass from Rondo or Craigslist, it doesn't need to be fancy. It will be worth it.

There is a preset in Amplitube called "guitar to bass" which works very well.
For everything thats not metal ...
/Troll off, using a digital octav-unit in conjunction with a fuzz or 808 emulation (TSE 808 would do) and some digital distortion thru a vst bass amp (important, atleast for me) works quite ok.
Buying a bass is still top though.
