Bear pelt problem

I've come up against a design flaw with the berserker costume for the concert on the 21st and may need some help with this one.

Basically, I have this bear-pelt that is draped upon my back, with the head balancing just above mine. Problem is, even with duct tape and D-batteries, I cannot get it to stay, that and the industrial stapler is being less than cooperative. I was thinking about using a hooded sweatshirt with a front zip to distribute the top-heavy load across the rest of the body, but I am not sure how well that would work out. Otherwise, I would likely have to detach the head and just wear a bear-skin cape...

Suggestions?

If you go to a place that sells leather work supplies, they should have a special double sided tape and with that you should be able to attach straps of sorts and then strap the head to your head.
If you put up a picture I would be able to provide you with better advice.

yes. pics please.

could you not just dig the jaws into your forehead? if you bury its teeth deep enough into your skull, you could headbang all night without it being dislodged!

Well, you could try to affix the area where the head meets the neck to a helmet or a sturdy hat, and then just cut off the parts of the hat that would be showing.

I'll have a camera soon (just got a Sony W170 10mpx this evening) so I can provide pictures then.

Also, the back paws flap around in the back since the pelt is wider than I; should I just cut them off and wear it as a cape or would it ruin the effect?

EPIC
that would ruin the effect btw.
you could try making a chin strap. Dunno if that'd ruin it for you though.

Leave the legs on. I'm with Babydoll on this. Double sided tape from the hardware store. You can attach that to a cheap, fake helm, so that the helm barely sticks out under the pelt, and it's OK to have chin straps on the helm. If all else fails, go to your local fabric store and ask the knowlegable people there.
You can buy really thin, black hoods for Halloween costumes. We've used those to attach "heavy stuff that won't stay on the head" in the past. They're very cheap and pretty much pliable to a point where you can hide them under stuff.
The main problem as I see it is that you will ABSOLUTELY DIE from the HEAT at the venue in such a costume.

Gazza, there's some sort of competiton on. Not sure who's sponsoring, when it's over and such, but it's something along the lines of "best Viking costume at X gig gets to meet the band" or whatever. Ya should have seen the morons at the gigs I went to... some clearly too hot, but the guys in the loin cloth were probably the most comfortable of all the fans in the heat! Epic.

you're going to a gig dressed up? this just keeps getting better and better. lol.

I needed to make something for Halloween and the Renaissance Faire, so I hit two birds with one stone. :heh:

Besides, what is more metal than the berserker?! Maybe if he wore a pelt signed by Amon Amarth & Ensiferum... but in either case, probably not you or your convict ancestors.

ah i didn't realise it was a comp.

I agree with Tyra on the issue of heat. The weight of it is going to be a pain in the ass. It's not very heavy when you hold it for a couple minutes but when you've got it strapped to your head for a few hours, that's something else.
Nonetheless, good luck with the costume, I hope you win this competition.

Another option is to also create chicken wire and paper maché mount of sorts. Cover the mount with faux fur or real fur, whatever works for you.
A friend of mine made a paper maché "helmet" with a giant deer head on it. He used chicken wire for the main support.

funny, seppo land had its fair share of convicts as well.

The backing for the rug was sewn to the bottom and there was a styrofoam mount to keep the head in place. Though a bit cumbersome, it was easily removed.
