I use this technique to get a whammy bar-type effect on my Epiphone SG. Can this technique damage the neck of the guitar or the guitar itself in any significant way?

As far as I know, as long as you aren't really cranking on the neck it should be ok. Just don't try to pull off a Kerry King style whammy freakout using your neck and it should be ok. ;)

I really would not recomend it personally. That's about all I can say...there are no guarantees to whether your guitar will be fine or damaged, but theres really no need to do stuff like that, we have whammy bars after all.

I don't have a whammy bar, thats why I do it in the first place.

Well, Steve Vai has been known for breaking thin Ibanez necks like that. :p
