best black metal song of all

"Det Som En Gang Var" is amazing.

I also give props to

Emperor-With Strength I Burn
Emperor-Inno A Satana
Mayhem-Funeral Fog
Darkthrone-A Blaze in the Northern Sky

And for the record, Dissection isn't quite black metal or death metal. I guess they could best be described as melodic death/black metal, only played the right way, and not in the homosexual post 1998 Gothenburg way.

and emperor, mayhem and darkthrone are far from *the best*

it's like a mainstream rock fan who automatically assumes that metallica and slipknot are the best metal bands because those are the ones they have heard of
well obviously we're going to respond with the best we've heard. if Opeth was the only band I've ever heard, and you asked me what my favorite song was, wouldnt it make 100% perfect sense that it would be an Opeth song? same goes for this topic.... out of all the black metal bands ive heard, the best songs come from Emperor, etc....

depends on what "style" you prefer.

although i have to point out that only the first 2 emperor releases can be considered black metal ("anthems" is debatable), as well as only the first 4 bathory albums; darkthrone mainly peaked with "a blaze..." through "panzerfaust" and ever since have been recording the same album over and over. all 3 bands are undoubtedly influential, even essential, but are not the be-all, end-all best of the genre.

well probably undoubtly "A Blaze In The Northen Sky" , "The Return" and "Anthems ..."
are among the top 10 black metal albums of all times (at least imo). So they are not that "far from the best". Few black metal bands can be compared with these albums (Beherit and Blasphemy perhaps)
And i think there is no question if Anthems is black metal or not.. imo its the ultimate and total black metal album ever.

well, depends on who you ask, i guess... i consider it to be mostly black metal, but there are MANY purists who say that it isn't. who knows, i could sorta care less how it's classified: it was my introduction into black metal four years ago and has led the way to my discovery of hundreds of great bands. so i guess i owe it that much...

well put it this way.... "Blaze" and "Funeral" are actually not that bad when i'm in the mood.... which unfortunately is about .5% of my time. i tend to say "Darkthrone sucks" a lot, but its not really that they suck, its just they aren't really for me (most of the time). Transylvanian Hunger, however, is helped a lot by 3 things, it has a mesmerising trance like atmosphere a la Katatonia's "Brave Murder Day", the riffs are excellently melodic, and the production, while obviously horrendus, has kind of a fuzzy and soft feeling to it that doesn't seem half as bad as their other albums, despite not being as sharp (i guess). "En As I Dype Skogen" in paticular is a fantastic song that is the perfect culmination of these factors.
