I'd also have to go with one of the past five years, as they have seen exponential growth in my two main areas of interest, progressive metal and extreme metal. Anyone who says that the 80s were metal's most creative period is probably ignorant to modern advances.

I haven't done my research to answer this question yet - but I wouldn't be so fast to discount the 80's contribution to the metal scene, and it's influence on the growth of metal to today's world.

I mean, bands like Possessed, Metallica, Slayer, Flotsam & Jetsam, Obituary, Zoetrope, Tokyo Blade, Celtic Frost, Dark Angel, Raven, Death, Exodus, Testament .............and so on, came from the 80's. Those were as good advances from times previous to that as today's bands advancements are to the 80's and up. Without some of these bands, maybe progressive and extreme metal wouldn't be what it is today - IMO. So I don't think that if I ultimately said some year in the 80's was the best would make me ignorant. I lived through those years, while many are listening to those bands now only in hindsight. Not many of you have actually followed bands like Metallica right from the beginning (1981 I think was their actual beginnings). I was already in my 20's then, and some of you wern't even born.

As far as death metal is concerned,the best year was 93,thats when death metal was big, aswell as the fashion.I got into it like in 92,and I remember how popular it was,there was a actual scene in my area for it.

After 94 it like started to lose popularity,and currently its gaining popularity again,some of the death/black metal bands now are even getting offers from major labels which signifies that death/black metal is back on the rise, its just another cycle that its going through like in the early 90's and I believe it will continue going through these cycles for some time.

So as long as we have inovative bands like Opeth metal will continue to sell and grow.

Hearse, I can't seem to appreciate The Dreadful Hours as an album but I still listen to individual tracks from time to time. It just seems flat in parts (especially lyrically) like a formula is being followed... It is also the best example of an MDB album sounding very similar to it's predecessor...but oh well, maybe it will grow on me? The Raven and the Rose rips!
