Im planning on buying a new half stack soon and wanted to get some opinions on what people are using. I was looking at the Marshall tsl 100 or the Marshall jvm 410. anyone recommend anything??

Yeah, I don't think you're gonna find anyone here recommending a Marshall, and you're better off not restricting yourself to getting a half-stack package (meaning, the same cab company than the head). For heads, we need a price range, though the 6505 will always be the best bang for your buck (and is preferred by many over any other head 4 times its cost). As for cabs, anything with Celestion Vintage 30s is golden, though the favorites are Mesa, Bogner, Orange, and if you're on a budget, Avatar.

For price range, basically nothing over 1500 for the head. so any recommendations would be helpful...

Fuck Marshalls...owned an 800 2203 and a 2000 TSL...the 800 was kinda cool but hardly ever got used, the 2000 was just there for show apparently, ahah.

I would say find a used 5150 on eBay and really search until your eyes bleed for a used Mesa cab. Probably one of the best and "standard" rigs for metal.

if you're willing to buy used, i'd check out any of the following

peavey 5150 (you gotta turn it up loud tho)
marshall jvm (great bang for the buck used IMO)
engl powerball
engl fireball
engl blackmore
mesa mark III (sounds great at low volume)
mesa mark IV (like the mark III but more options)
vht deliverance
mesa single/dual rectifier
peavey jsx

personally i own a mesa mark III & vht deliverance and love them...i paid just under $1700 for both of them (used of course)

i've also got a framus cobra that's awesome, but you won't find that under the $1500 mark...but i'd gladly own any of the amps listed above (and have owned quite a few of them!)

5150 and Avatar cab with V30s and G12T100s or G12T75s (depending on how loud you want the G12T sound to come through) would be my vote for the 'usuals', but for interesting and uncommon stuff there's always Engl, Bogner, Krank...
