Australia has a fair few. Dungeon are definately worth checking out, and they have a forum here at UM! Awesome melodic yet thrashy power metal, go check em out.

astriaal (black metal) good production, if you don't mind it like that they are very good. Some really good accoustic parts. If i had to liken them to another band id say they are kinda like dimmu + satyricon but in a good way. even if you don't like those bands you may like this. They are worth a go i reckon. Probably my favourite australian band at the moment...good atmosphere.
Devolved (industial-ish death-ish metal)
Hard to explain....sorta like meshuggah, sorta like fear factory but heavier than them.....might be hard to get into but they are fairly good.
Destroyer 666 are also not too bad...
Alchemist have a few Very good songs but are a bit overated imo.
Disembowelment are ok if you like slow atmospheric doom....personally i get bored but i can appreciate their appeal to some.
Vanishing point are in the same vein as dream theater and symphoney x....though in my opinion not as.......... gay. They are a good band if you can tolerate that kind of style i think they are accessable to all metal fans though.
