Lead female vocals, or just female vocals as accompaniment?

Simone Simons and "Mari" provide some of the best accompanying female vocals on Kamelot's Epica and The Black Halo records.

As far as lead female vocals, I'd probably say Nightwish.

But some of the best female vocals in metal are Elisabeth Toriser's on Abigor's Nachthymnen (not power metal, I know).

Yeah, early Dark Moor was good shit. When Fairyland had Elisa they were good too; well, they still are but yeah.

I've found that a lot of people who typically like more extreme forms of metal, and particularly frown on power metal, actually enjoy The Black Halo. It's definitely a great record, and it's pretty dark for a Kamelot album.

Well in that case, check out Chastain - Voice of the Cult. Dave Chastain has made a career out of lame shred albums, but this one album rules, it's awesome heavy riffs and leads with the most powerful female voice I've ever heard.

That opening riff is sick; I'm already digging it.

It kind of reminds me of early Queensryche (i.e. Warning) but with female vocals and a more power metal-oriented style.

Oh, I thought of one that rules that I forgot about. Fatima Hill...I managed to find both albums somehow (actually one was at MDF last year for 3 bucks...score!). Really powerful and unique Japanese chick vocalist and great epic music overall. More prog power but still.
