BIG BIG sound at home!

what do you mean? you mean pod settings?

best to just go with something you think is cool man, dont want every band sounding the same hehe

although best to stay away from mega high gain

Random fact: The opening riff in Alterra sounds a lot like the chorus riff in Cold Victim by Thine Eyes Bleed.

Took me a while to figure that one out.

Yeah that sounds a lot better, but why not pan them all the way out 100% left and right? That will make for even wider, even better sounding guitars, so long as the takes are tight.

i do not think that getting DFH to sound like that is in ANY way easy and DOES require a good amount of know-how

I agree that it takes some good ears and know-how. However, one of the most basic, fundamental things that you will learn about recording is that the source material of something is largely responsible for how good it will sound after mixing. If your toms sound like crap in the room, even if they're just "pretty good", they will never sound AMAZING during mixing, or even if you put the most expensive mic on it. Same goes for a guitar amp that doesn't sound really great in front of it, less than ideal mic placement, etc etc...
My point is, a huge reason why you are able to get DFH sounding polished like it does, is because the dudes who recorded those raw drum sounds were talented engineers and knew exactly what needed to be done to capture sounds that had the potential to turn out they way they do. There is a huge aspect of intelligent engineering that went into those drum sounds, which those engineers deserve credit for, which you had nothing to do with.

So honestly, if someone were to tell you how amazing your DFH drum sounds are, your basic attitude (not necessarily your exact words) should be something like "Well thanks dude, it definitely took some work to process things and get them sounding polished like that, but I owe a lot of credit to the engineers who recorded such pro sounding samples in the first place."

andychaos, you can definetely pan the guitars more, hard panned or 80-90% both make sense and work fine, IMO.

As for the mixes, they're quite good if you've been doing this for just half an year. There is some muddiness to be cleared up. The guitars are pretty nice for a POD but they can be better and after you practise mic positioning you should get pretty good results with the Engl. Good luck!
