Big guitar sound

This has probably cropped up a thousand times, but I'm after different techniques to create a big fat guitar sound. At present I create a second guitar track (an exact copy of the first) panned hard left with a slight delay. I then pull this back in the mix and lay another over the top.
How does andy get his sound? I especially like the Kill II This sound. Are there any better ways out there.
p.s. Just in case, I mic up my cab using an SM57.

...by the way, I meant that the first guitar track is panned hard left AND right with a very short delay on the right.
