Black Dahlia-ish

Kick and snare were completely replaced using a combination of Slate Trigger samples and LSD samples. I think I had 4-5 kicks blended and 2-3 snares. Toms are au natural and I used Audix D2's on the racks, the D4 on the high floor and a 421 on the low floor tom. I close mic'd the crashes, in groups of 2, using Rode nt5's, mic'd the hihats using a Heil PR-40, and mic'd the ride using a 57. I didn't use a room mic simply because we tracked in my living room and didn't sound great. That and I really didn't think I would use it considering how much shit is going on in the music. The snare, toms, and OH's were all sent to the same reverb bus and I just used Roomworks in Cubase. I EQ'd each track to remove 30Hz and below, scooped some of the woofy lo-mids and raised the high end to help it cut through better. I think I used Stillwell Audio compressors on each drum track with only a few dB of GR. For the OH's I filtered out up to about 500Hz. Oh, and on the hihat and ride track I inserted a gate to help get ride of any unnecessary room tone.

great info. thanks a lot. i like the mix and that band is good too.:) 4-5 kicks?haha. what did you use?

Thank ye, and I'm happy to share. The main kick sound was the LSD metal click sample and then blended lower was his big rock kick I think. I also used a couple slate samples blended kinda low too. Again I don't have my session in front of me so I can't recal the exact samples. I also used a pretty drastic EQ, high shelf set around 7kHz boosted pretty high, around 80Hz boosted a couple dB, filter 50Hz out and a huge scoop in the midrange. Then compress the hell out of it.

Nice drums, but the guitars are kinda contoured and sound wierdly distant, no where near to "in your face", they just don't strike.
The rest is nice though.

I think that's because the guitars were overgained a bit (and the mids were cranked, never let the band set up their own amp) while tracking and I had to scoop out some upper midrange to make room for the snare/toms. As long as there's nothing hugely wrong I think I can live with turning this over to them. Thanks for listening everyone.
